Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is an OBI strip? A: An OBI is the paper band wrapped around Japanese CD releases. It contains the catalog number, price, and other info. OBI Scanner can read these, but also works with any CD barcode worldwide.
Q: How do I get Discogs API keys? A: Go to discogs.com/settings/developers, create a free account if needed, and generate a new app. Copy the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret into the Settings tab in OBI Scanner.
Q: Why can't the app find my disc? A: Try scanning the barcode instead of the catalog number — barcodes are the most reliable identifier. Make sure the barcode is clear and well-lit in the photo. If the release isn't on Discogs, it won't be found.
Q: Does it work with vinyl records? A: Yes! Any release with a barcode or catalog number that exists on Discogs can be identified, including vinyl, CD, SACD, SHM-CD, and more.
Q: How is the collection value calculated? A: The estimated value is the sum of the lowest current Discogs Marketplace price for each release in your collection. This is a conservative estimate based on real listings.
Q: Does my collection sync between devices? A: Yes. Your collection syncs automatically via iCloud between all your devices signed into the same Apple ID. No setup needed beyond enabling iCloud in the app's Xcode capabilities.
Q: Is my data private? A: Yes. OBI Scanner does not collect any personal data. Your collection is stored locally and in your private iCloud account. See our Privacy Policy for details.
