Overview
OBI Scanner is an app for identifying and cataloguing physical music releases. This policy explains what data the app stores, where it goes and what it never does.
Data collection
OBI Scanner does not collect, store or transmit any personal data to us. We run no servers that receive data from the app.
What stays on your device (and in your iCloud)
- API keys and settings: your Discogs consumer key and secret, optional Brave Search API key and optional MPD server address, stored in the app's local preferences.
- Collection data: release metadata (artist, title, catalog number, label, year, format, prices you refreshed, dynamic range values you entered), stored with SwiftData and synced to your private iCloud database via CloudKit.
- Photos: photos you take of your discs, stored as compressed images in your collection and synced through your iCloud.
Text and barcode recognition run entirely on your device using Apple's Vision framework. Your photos are never uploaded for recognition.
Network connections
OBI Scanner only connects to the following services, and only as a result of something you do in the app:
- Discogs (api.discogs.com): to search releases by barcode or catalog number and fetch release details, images and Marketplace prices. Your Discogs API credentials are sent with each request. Only the recognised barcode or catalog number is sent, never the photo.
- MusicBrainz (musicbrainz.org): to look up additional release and credit information, such as mastering engineers.
- Loudness War DB (dr.loudness-war.info): to look up dynamic range values for the versions of an album.
- Brave Search API (api.search.brave.com), optional: only if you add your own key, to search the Steve Hoffman Music Forums for discussion about an album's masterings. The search query contains the artist and album title.
- Your MPD server, optional: only if you configure one, to check whether a release is in your library and to start playback. This connection stays on your network.
- Your WebDAV server, optional: when another app you use (such as DrMobile) asks OBI Scanner to identify an image, OBI Scanner downloads that image from the server address and credentials that app passes along. Those credentials are used for that download only and are not stored.
- Apple iCloud (CloudKit): to sync your collection between your devices. Data is stored in your private iCloud database and is not accessible to us.
Analytics and tracking
OBI Scanner does not include any analytics, tracking, advertising or third-party crash-reporting frameworks.
Third parties
We do not sell or share any data. The services listed above receive only what is needed to answer each request, under their own privacy policies.
Data deletion
Your data lives on your devices and in your private iCloud account. To delete it:
- Individual discs: swipe to delete in the Collection tab.
- Everything: delete the app, then remove its iCloud data in Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Storage.
There is no server-side data under our control to delete.
Children
OBI Scanner does not collect data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new date.
